I personally have no problem contributing some of my taxes to programs designed to give a leg up to people who need it.

But you do have a problem with letting people decide freely whether or not to contribute. Better not give people a choice. They might not do what you think they should.

It's so ironic. American are incredibly generous to begin with you don't really have to point a gun to their heads to make them give. In fact all these government charity programs work to dry up charitable giving. People think why should I give money to charity, that's why I pay all those taxes.

The New York Times magazine last Sunday had a story about the "new selfishness,"

FOUL!! Personal attack against some who has a philosophical disagreement with you. And don't try to tell me that you weren't calling me selfish personally. I personally made the argument and you attacked that argument with reference to the new selfishness. Close enough. I take offense.

It's not about selfishness, it's about power. Who should control the wealth. The people who create it or the collective. People who chose the collective have little in common with the classical liberal thinkers.
