Thanks for the posting Steve. Here are some numbers from that press release that are very impressive.

Inktomi - 380 URL/sec 380ms response time
NetApp 700 URL/sec 20ms response time

Not to mention the fact that setting up the NeApp takes a few hours, running it is "lights out". Whereas the INKT is on a big Sun Ultra Enterprise 2x2 which takes days to set up and has all of the joy of running a big Unix system.

Note the difference in response time though serving twice as many URLs/second. NetApp has tuned the Netcache software to run on the ONTAP OS. We had heard that this was coming. This shows clearly the advantage of the appliance approach, as opposed to special software running on general purpose operating systems such as UNIX or NT.

Also look at the economic argument showing an 8 month ROI.

I would say that growth of NTAPP over the next 2-5 years will be largely determined by growth of intra/internets worldwide. They are months or years ahead of their competitors in terms of price/performance.
