Samsung will put US$250 million more into U.S. plant

Nov 09, 1998 - Samsung Electronics plans to invest US$250 million in its
memory chip plant in Austin, Texas, by the year's end to replace its dynamic
random access memory chip design equipment, according to company
officials.

Samsung Austin Semiconductor, a wholly owned subsidiary, will raise the
fund locally with US$150 million through Samsung Electronics' payment
guarantee. As a result, Samsung's payment guarantee for SAS will increase
to US$607 million, the officials said.

With the projected installation of new equipment, SAS will be able to
increase its monthly output of 64-megabit DRAM chips from the current 3
million units to 4 million. The memory chip plant was completed early this
year at a total cost of US$700 million.

Samsung Electronics has extended payment guarantee totaling US$3.43
billion for its 37 overseas subsidiaries. It is equivalent to seven times the
company's paid-in capital, the officials said.
