jbe - the problem is that working within a "two-party" system there is always going to be a polarization on a given issue - i.e., if those who decry moral relativism happen to be among Republicans, it is the default position of the left/Democrats who decry the religious influence of their opponents. It has been the purview of the liberals to challenge conservatism and its religious roots at every turn. What is there to fill the void if classic moral religious attributes are challenged? Nature abhors a vacuum, so in place of religious influence, all manner of formerly inappropriate behaviors must be allowed to first, be de-stigmatized, in order to disprove the validity of the religious tenets against them. One they are successfully twisted into acceptable, those behaviors begin to flourish. Soon enough, there are enough people engaging in them to form a constituency of sorts.

Commercialism thrives in religiously influenced conservative, fundamentalist entities. The economy and technologies certainly can be facilitators, but IMO, their effects serve more to amplify the movement as opposed to steering it.

Libertarians as politicians are not classic left/socialists. They are reactionaries - in response to efforts on the part of the rest of us, they would rather liberals and conservatives just leave everyone alone. There is, after all, a significant difference between "liberal" and "liberty."

BTW - Please don't think you're butting in!

Mr. K.
