John, first-off this shouldn't come as a surprise

Check out:

Part of my reason for posting the above was so all the
3Dfx shareholders wouldn't panic when Broadcom came out
with the announcement. Rumors have had this in the works
for some time...

Basically, Broadcom is an enabler for 3D acceleration
on the set-top, they don't plan to have the best 3D. So, this is 3Dfx's clue to add a retail part for Glide games :-)

Most of all, (IMO!!!) I view this as direct competition for ATI, as this puts the default 2D/3d acceleration into the set-top; which GI went to ATI to get. Now Broadcom essentially offers a complete chip set for GI to do the graphics and connectivity (via cable modem) for your set-top. Gives them a price advantage, one-stop solution for GI. But keep in mind, it is not Broadcoms core market to develop graphics chips: they have higher margin business elsewhere. Of course my opinion is biased since I've been trading Broadcom since the IPO.

O.T. Could some one clue me in on how to paste in previous "Reply #8674" message links on SI?
