Hello Vaughn,

It was interesting to note that the casualties/captives were all from Diamondworks and that the locals were left alone. It seems very strange that the diamond inventory and the plant were untouched. Was this meant to be a message to Diamondworks or their alleged military friends? Or another food grab? Maybe someone was upset with DMW for other reasons?

Nonetheless, very sad for the families and friends of those involved.

I talked with SUF: Lee Barker is in Luanda, and Dr. Jennings is in RSA; and while no one had chatted with them by early am, the feeling was that SUF's security was upgraded after the spring incident to provide better protection. I'd guess the situation would be reviewed in any case. I've been told previously that all SUF people feel a good level of safety and have a good understanding of the regional risks.

Can anyone find a source for this or related news from some place other than Diamondworks? While all reports from this region are very biased, it would be appropriate to hear what the other side has to say. I wonder sometimes how much of the reporting is "real"; I mean we can see how distorted the North American press gets -- the pressure to create certain "news" must be great for all those in the area, including the UN folks.

Regards,
