Philips and SkyStream Join Forces to Create Open Broadcast Network

11/10/98 Business Wire (Copyright (c) 1998, Business Wire)

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1998--

World Leader in Digital Video Broadcasting
Selects Open Broadcast Networking Start-up for

Conditional Access and Video/Data Integration

SkyStream Corporation and Philips Digital Video Systems Company today announced a working relationship for the integration of SkyStream products into the Philips family of broadcast systems, to create a fully interoperable DVB and ATSC solution. The new relationship will further the creation of open standards and interoperability in the broadcast environment.
SkyStream's Integrator family, which has been successfully tested and integrated with Philips' family of MPEG 2 encoders, TokenMuxTM multiplexers, CryptoWorksTM conditional access systems, and CleverCastTM DVB PCI receiver cards, will allow broadcasters to leverage both companies' expertise in building high performance and content secure video and data broadcast products. Included in the SkyStream products is the company's patent-pending Null Packet Optimization (NPO) software, which allows broadcasters to inject Internet and other high speed IP data into the null packets of an MPEG stream. Broadcasters can reclaim this bandwidth to set up new revenue-generating services such as web caching, high-speed file transferring and corporate data broadcasting.

"With this announcement, broadcasters can now obtain best-of-breed products from two industry leaders to install into their digital video networks," said Jan van Bekkum, director of marketing and sales, Digital Transmission Systems, Philips Digital Video Systems. "With the DBN-26 from SkyStream, for example, any customer can integrate our MPEG encoders and TokenMux multiplexers with any legacy conditional access system with ease."

"SkyStream's mission is to help broadcasters create the highest performance digital networks by creating an interoperable environment with the world's leading equipment suppliers," said Clint Chao, vice president of marketing for SkyStream. "Philips is a world-renown leader in building the highest performance MPEG encoders and muxes. Using SkyStream's DBN-26, even legacy networks can easily integrate Philips technology into their systems. We are proud to be working with such a world leader in broadcast products."

The DBN-26 adds an industry-standard DVB-Simulcrypt interface to allow the injection of any compliant conditional access system to an MPEG -based system. The system has been tested to inter-operate with many different encoder and CAS solutions in the market. The Philips and SkyStream interoperability tests were performed at Philips Integration Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

I know, some are repeats but wanted them together. Thought the timing of announcements was interesting.
