Cobalt, you can't imagine how important it was back then in the 60's to save storage. It was a virtue, and no one ever imagined that these programs would be used 35 years later. Our Fortran compiler was immense, and generated optimized code (to save storage). The compiler itself was in overlay format since the whole program couldn't fit in storage at one time. As an aside, I once discovered a bug in a coworker's code and when I pointed it out, he responded "but when is that set of circumstances ever going to happen" And this was at IBM in her heyday.
