U.S. OPTIONS/Whole Foods vols jump, awaiting Q4

Reuters Story - November 09, 1998 20:11

CHICAGO, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Implied volatility in Whole Foods Market options spiked on Monday as the stock tumbled ahead of the release of natural food retailer's fiscal fourth quarter results, due on Wednesday.

Volatility, a key factor in determining options prices, jumped as high as 90 percent in the nearby 35 contracts, traders said. Volatility ended the day around 72 percent, from around 62 percent early in the session.

The puts were more expensive than the calls, reflecting negative sentiment, said Paul Foster, investment strategist and editor of 1010WallStreet.com.

According to a First Call survey, the mean estimate of eight brokers was for a profit of $0.40 per share.

Whole Foods stock shed 4-27/32 to end at 35-9/32.

The company declined to comment.

Separately, Business Week magazine in its November 16 issue quoted a New York investment manager as saying Whole Foods, the top natural foods retailer, might be targeting its competitor Wild Oats Markets Inc. for a takeover.

But traders shrugged off the report, attributing the rise in volatility and above-average trading volume to concern about earnings.

Stephen, thanks for reminding me of Nature's Fresh. I was in Oregon end of July and came across that chain. They are wonderful stores. Beautiful and large. Lots of produce, lots of organics, however they did not seem to use their space very well. Aisles were huge, helping to give a nice shopping experience and nice aesthetics, however sales did not seem to be brimming.

If you can get your hands on old copies of Supermarket News (late Sept or early Oct, there was quite a lengthy article GNC's purchase of Nature's Fresh. They have a web site but you must subscribe.

BTW - I do not fight the tape. I locked in my profit with a stop-loss at 38 7/8 today and will look to buy before the bell tomorrow, hopefully less than $35. Still long on OATS, though.
