Not a stupid question--but an easy one.

If you have realized a gain of $1000 on one security, and realized a loss of $1000 on another security, your net gain is 0 and you owe no tax. In other words, the offsetting $1000 loss saves you:

$1000 x tax rate

next April (the amount of taxyou would pay on the gain if you did not have the offsetting loss).
