Craig,

How much space is there inside a digital camera for on-board memory? Once you start figuring in power supply, LCD display, autofocus controls, a lens/prism design for SLR's, automated flash and a self-timer you end up with little room. The CompactFlash also gives you freedom from using the camera itself as a downloading device. Also, the use of a Zip Disk, MicroDrive or high capacity floppy makes for a big bulky dinosaur like the Mavica and adds to further power consumption problems. I see the problem differently. Some manufacturers have used limited amounts of on-board memory supplemented by removable storage options. Storage capacities will rise in concert with image size as resolution increases, so the option of 100 MB of on-board solid state flash memory may not suffice for your average three of four roll vacation where you have 75 to 100 images.

I hope that you are wrong. Only time will tell.
