dd - There was no "official" offer that I know of, but in the weeks following McCracken's resignation last year (while he was still 'acting CEO') there were rumours circulating about Compaq or IBM talking to the board of directors about a buyout. Some this, as I recall, was published in San Jose Mercury. The $18 price is completely my own guess, given that the stock was trading in the $12-$15 range at the time.

I think if the board was thinking about selling, they could have done it at that time, since with McCracken leaving it would have been easier.
