Dell Will Stick To Making PCs: Chairman

TOKYO (Nikkei)- Dell Computer Corp. will continue to focus its resources on personal computers, company founder Michael Dell told The Nihon Keizai Shimbun on Wednesday. The firm has no near-term plan to form partnerships with makers of home appliances, automotive equipment or other products.

"We don't want to start too many different activities which would disperse our capabilities."

Dell Computer continues to enjoy annual sales increases of more than 50% and is a major player in the U.S. market. Dell said the company targets 20%-25% of the world market (it currently holds about 8%) and is not thinking of venturing into new areas.

The chairman cautioned against the danger of spreading resources too thinly and diluting business strength; the company will focus on expanding market share in its area of strength, he said.

"The successful companies in the economy are not the ones which are trying to be all things to all people. Rather, they are specialized companies, highly focused companies. These large conglomerations of relatively unconnected businesses have not had a great deal of success."

This stands in stark contrast to the strategy of International Business Machines Corp., which reportedly plans aggressive diversification into home appliances and the auto industry.

Dell plans to start building computers in Brazil next year, after completing a plant now under construction in China.

Try a few minutes of acupuncture on the "red dragon" points ... I'm sure it will help.
