re: HDTV the new fronter.

Digital TV to PCs
AOL Investment Snapshot (tm): CPQ
from Bloomberg News

Osaka (Nov. 10) -- Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., the world's largest maker of consumer electronics, and Compaq Computer Corp. said they will next year start selling the first device that brings digital television to personal computers.

The device is designed to adapt high-definition television, which stations around the U.S. began broadcasting Nov. 1, to the PC screen. HDTV has a high-quality signal and clearer picture than conventional television broadcasts.

The device consists of two cards that are inserted into the computer and will sell for $800 to $900, said Trey Smith, vice president for advanced products at Compaq, the No. 1 PC maker.

PC-DTV is aimed at the same customers who might buy DVD movie discs and other digital products, Smith said. The technology now allows only for viewing the digital TV signal, although there will be interactive capabilities ''very soon,'' Smith said. He wasn't more specific.

Matsushita Electric developed the device using Houston-based Compaq's designs for systems that display television images on computer screens. Matsushita will manufacture PC-DTV and market it initially to computer manufacturers, broadcasters and companies that will develop digital TV programming.

The companies will begin selling the decoder, known as PC- DTV, in the first quarter under Matsushita's Panasonic brand. Matsushita will begin making 10,000 units of the printed circuit cards on a monthly basis next April and supply the cards to Compaq, said Tokikazu Matsumoto, an official involved in the product development. The company wants to raise the monthly production to 50,000 units within one year, he said.

The cards will be initially priced at 400,000 yen ($3,300). The price may gradually be reduced to 100,000 yen, he said.

Matsushita Electric shares rose 42 yen to 1,975. Compaq rose 7/16 yesterday to 32 7/16.

RE: **** OT*** Frank Lloyd Wright on PBS & at pbs.org

Thanks! I would have missed this if you hadn't mentioned it. Things are hectic but I'll make time for this...or tape it if I can't watch when broadcast. Will also pass the info along to a niece interested in architecture. Who knows? You might be responsible for encouraging a new generation of Wright architecture.

I couldn't resist my niece is a Wright and 8 years old.

Thanks again.

Enjoy the day! As VG says, Happy New Year!
