I2 and Manugistics: a perspective from Geoffrey Moore, author of the Gorilla Game <<This one is a real test of fortitude. From where I sit, the issues will not go away, so the market for supply chain I think will tornado. The big question is, how? Two things have put the kibosh on short-term prospects for these two companies in particular—Y2K investments are cutting off some budgets, and SAP has "declared." Neither of these two effects hurts the up-and-coming little guy anywhere near as much as these two well-established leaders. Y2K, of course, goes away, so the real issue long term is what to make of SAP? The huge advantage SAP has is "nobody ever got fired for." So I think they will sell a lot of add-on modules for supply chain. These will not be anywhere near as good as the stuff from I2 and Manu, but when has that mattered? The question I have is, will those modules make the transition from intra-company, where I think they have a slam dunk, to inter-company, where quality really does matter. Nonetheless, it is a definite damper on the category's performance. FYI, and in the interests of FULL disclosure, I am going to be working more closely with MANU over the next year, so I will no longer be commenting on this category going forward. Wish me luck. I hope Mr. Moore does not mind me posting this here. I'll find out if he does. I'm really interested in how SAP will effect SCM. How many installed vendors in SAP's orbit will wait for that company's SCM solution or seek out an already established SCM provider because the need is so compelling not to wait.
