I saw the interview and he downplayed the Portico service vis a vis future contractual commitments with others for MagicTalk. He didn't seem that nervous to me but he did miss some opportunities to explain Portico when he just responded "Yes, that's right" to Mark's semi lame understanding of Portico. Markman did a good job explaining that GMGC licenses speech technology from L&H and is not their competitor after Mark implied L&H is a big boy that could bury GMGC. Markman's explanation was clear and concise.

Mark queried him as to why any carriers would be interested in using GMGC's network operating system, that they'd rather have their own and Markman explained how the carriers had been burned in the past by their own substantial investments in new technology and how Portico represented a good opportunity without the need for carrier cash outlay. He then ended the session with the idea that if Portico became wildly popular he'd love to face the problem of carriers buying out the service.

It's MagicTalk, my impression, that Markman stressed as the growth engine. However I can see by the way the street is reacting this morning that no mention of carrier contracts and talk of future MagicTalk contracts isn't currently cutting it.

I thought that Steve Markman was well-spoken and cheerful in the interview on CBS Squawk box today at 9:50 a.m. He was dignified and at ease. He explained the role that General Magic wishes to set forth with the telcos and what General Magic could do for them(customize their Portico needs). He spoke of the future plans of General Magic regarding the magicTalk platform and new business ventures. I was very pleased to see how well he did in this brief interview. He appeared poised and confident.
