Why is NewKidCo the only thing mentioned in the statements about Alpha Software in today's press release? In previous releases, they talked about the rest of their line. More incompetence?

ONLINE merchant achieves critical mass, wins internet WORLDs Best of Test.

* * * * FOUR STARS (out of four)

New Solutions Put E-Commerce Within the Reach of Everyone

These five entry-level storefront-building packages are designed for non-techies

"...Until recently, Internet storefront-building packages have been complex, expensive, and generally not for the fainthearted. Now, a new generation of products is redefining the world of e-commerce, with remarkably low thresholds for investment and expertise. Today, just about anybody who wants a Web store should be able to find a fit.

Two new-wave products, iCat Commerce Online and Yahoo Store, were the subject of a four-part series in Internet World earlier this year [see Setting Up Shop, Internet World, Sept. 7, 14, 21, and 28]. In this edition of IW Labs we look at five more: Alpha Software's Online Merchant, IMSI's Web Business Builder, Multiactive Technologies' ecBuilder, Sitematic's Sitematic, and StoresOnline.com's StoresOnline.

The rise of Web hosting has been a key factor in democratizing online commerce, so it's no surprise that hosting is tied--sometimes loosely, sometimes tightly--to most entry-level storefront solutions. The packages we review fall into three groups, depending on how the store is created and where it's hosted: (1) Conventional standalone programs that create a store on a PC--the merchant must select an ISP or other host and upload the store; (2) standalone programs that create a store on a PC and that have an automatic connection to a specific host; and (3) Web-based store creation, where the store is developed and maintained while online with the Web host.

Creating a store online requires only a Web browser and can be done from anywhere (and by anyone), but this approach is almost invariably slower, Web response times being what they are, and tends to offer fewer options. The PC-based approaches are slicker and speedier, but are often more complex and harder to learn. Which is best for you depends on how many features your store will need. Our Features Comparison table should help guide your choice.

• Multiactive Technologies

• Alpha Software Inc.

• Sitematic Corp.

• Stores Online.com Inc.

• IMSI's Web Business Builder 1.1

...More than any of the other programs in this roundup, Alpha Software's Online Merchant makes developing an online store easy to understand--no small achievement, considering that the package also offers a good set of features, including extensive sales promotion capabilities. This is a strong program for the merchant who needs more sophisticated product-management and merchandising options without getting involved in custom programming...Some of Online Merchant's other limitations-especially support for credit card verification, reporting, and database connectivity--will be addressed in the forthcoming Professional Edition, scheduled for fourth quarter release. For many online stores, the current version will do all that's wanted..."
