Go2Net Names Oren Etzioni to Board of Directors
PR Newswire - November 10, 1998 08:47

SEATTLE, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Go2Net, Inc. (Nasdaq: GNET), a network of technology- and community-driven Web sites ( go2net.com ), has appointed Dr. Oren Etzioni, co-creator of the renowned MetaCrawler online search service, to its Board of Directors. Etzioni, a professor at the University of Washington's Department of Computer Science, also co-founded Netbot, Inc., which was acquired by Excite, Inc. in 1997.

"Oren is one of the most respected figures in the world of Web search technology," said Russell C. Horowitz, Go2Net chief executive officer. "We're extremely fortunate to be adding someone of his caliber and experience to take an active role on our Board and in helping to shape the company's future."

For Etzioni, the appointment marks a reunion, of sorts. Go2Net acquired the exclusive license to MetaCrawler in 1997, and the site has since been recognized by many industry publications as the Internet's finest search service. Etzioni has published more than 50 technical papers on intelligent software agents, Web search technology and machine learning, among other topics. His work has been featured in The New York Times, Newsweek, Forbes Magazine, Business Week, The Economist and Discover Magazine.

He received a bachelor's degree in computer science from Harvard University and Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University.

Go2Net's Hypermart Provides Free Hosting for More Than 100,000 Businesses
PR Newswire - November 09, 1998 08:47

SEATTLE, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Go2Net, Inc. (Nasdaq: GNET), a network of technology- and community-driven Web sites ( go2net.com ), today announced that Hypermart ( hypermart.net ), the Web's leading provider of free business hosting services, has surpassed 100,000 members. Since its acquisition by Go2Net in August, Hypermart's membership base has grown at the rate of more than 400 businesses per day, including organizations and entrepreneurs from more than 235 countries.

"Hypermart has generated tremendous momentum by offering businesses the opportunity to establish themselves on the Internet in the most cost-effective means possible," explained Russell C. Horowitz, Go2Net chief executive officer. "This has created a vibrant online community of business owners and entrepreneurs, focused on executing their respective business plans and looking to make the most of the medium. We look forward to expanding our service offerings to grow with them."

Hypermart members can use Microsoft FrontPage, Netscape Composer, or their favorite Web authoring packages to create their business Web site. Additionally, Hypermart maintains an extensive database of Hypermart members who volunteer to help new members create their sites. Hypermart also offers free registration and hosting of virtual domains, CGI access, unlimited Web site traffic capacity and an SSL secure server option. In exchange for receiving free hosting by Hypermart, member businesses agree to allow Go2Net to market relevant advertising space on their sites.

"There are significant advertising, sponsorship and commerce opportunities by virtue of the size, focus and diversity of Hypermart's membership," Horowitz added. "Many Hypermart members have expressed interest in being offered a turnkey ecommerce solution, to sell goods and services over the Internet. Go2Net currently plans to unveil online storefronts and other commerce options for Hypermart members in early 1999."

According to International Data Corporation ("IDC"), 7% of all small businesses in the United States had a Web site at the end of 1997. However, IDC expects small and medium-sized businesses to generate most of the growth in the Web hosting market, and account for 95% of the total estimated Web hosting market in the United States by the year 2000. Hypermart is uniquely positioned to be a beneficiary of the significant growth resulting from this expansion by businesses onto the Web. Further, IDC estimates that the market for enhanced Internet services in the United States, including Web hosting, will grow from approximately $352 million in 1997 to over $7 billion in the year 2000.
