Consumers To Buy Record Number Of PCs This Holiday NEW CANAAN, Conn. (Reuters) - Senior citizens newly anxious to get online will join the rush to the shopping counter, resulting in a record number of personal computers being bought this holiday season, a survey said. Research services firms MarketMaps of New Canaan, Conn., and CENTRIS of Philadelphia said U.S. consumers are planning to buy five million PCs between Nov. 1, 1998, and Jan. 31, 1999. According to the survey of more than 2,000 households, completed on Nov. 4, consumers will spend more than $12 billion for PCs, software and accessories. ... The survey also found that that 2.3 million households plan to acquire their first PC this holiday season, while repeat buyers plan to spend $225 more on average than are first-time buyers. Overall, consumers plan to spend $1,500 on average for each PC, including the monitor. nt.excite.com
