Investors bet on a Net Christmas

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Internet stocks, particularly those likely to benefit from strong online buying by consumers during the holidays, vaulted Tuesday on a wave of positive sentiment, analysts said.

Optimism that online shopping and advertising will grow sharply this holiday season lifted stocks like online auctioneer eBay Inc., which soared $25, or about 25 percent, to $128. Goldman Sachs analyst Rakesh Sood raised his price target on the high-flying stock to $150.

On Monday, a survey by Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq:DELL - news) said that online sales are expected to surge in coming months, with 43 percent of Americans who use computers likely to shop on the Internet this holiday season.

That is a 330 percent increase over the 1997 holiday season when just 10 percent shopped online.

On Monday, Excite said it will offer an electronic commerce purchasing system that lets users buy from several retailers without having to enter billing information many times. The search engine service, Excite Inc. (Nasdaq:XCIT - news), rose to $53, up $5.50. Volpe Brown analyst Andrea Williams said Excite is well positioned to
capture new consumers and revenues online.

The stocks of other search and media companies like Yahoo Inc (Nasdaq:YHOO - news)! and Lycos Inc. (Nasdaq:LCOS - news), which lead surfers to commerce sites and facilitate some online purchasing, also firmed.

Yahoo jumped to $175.375, up $10.625, while Lycos gained $4.375 to $56. CNET Inc. (Nasdaq:CNWK - news) rose to $50, up $5.65.

Everen Securities analyst Andrea Grosz increased her price target on Internet service providers EarthLink Network Inc. and MindSpring Enterprises Inc. (Nasdaq:MSPG - news), which give consumers access to the Web, to $61 and 72, respectively.

MindSpring rose $5.06 to $57.875, while Earthlink rose $1.625 to $56.75.

Pure Internet retailers also benefited from the buying spree. Book and CD seller Amazon.com Inc. rose $11.125 to $138, music merchant CDnow Inc. (Nasdaq:CDNW - news) rose $3 to $11.43 and N2K Inc. (Nasdaq:NTKI - news) jumped 44 percent to $8.125.

Internet software seller Egghead.com Inc. rose $2.50 to $13.94.
