DVXplore at Comdex...

C - CUBE TO DEMO MPEG-2 CODEC AT COMDEX

11/09/98 DVD Report
(c) 1998 Phillips Business Information, Inc.

C - Cube will demonstrate its new MPEG-2 codec at this week's Fall Comdex show in Las Vegas, NV. C - Cube is renaming its previously announced 2Real chip (DVD Report, March 18) DVxplore, touting it as an enabler for "digital VCR" applications on the PC. DVxplore also enables DVD playback and MPEG-2 video editing. The $75 chip is sampling now, with OEM shipments expected in the fourth quarter.

Peripherals using the chip are expected to debut in the second quarter of 1999, at prices in the $300 range. Inexpensive MPEG-2 encoding technology will be at the heart of future recordable DVD applications, in the PC or on the set-top, which are expected to use DVD-RAM as a storage platform. C - Cube claims "endorsements" of DVxplore from such PC technology companies as Microsoft, Matrox, Creative Labs, and Ulead.

InterVideo Opens Its Doors; Second Generation Software DVD Player is
First Offering; Software Codec Vendor Will Deliver Full Suite Of Video
And Audio Products In 1999

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 11, 1998--InterVideo, Inc. unveiled itself to the public today, announcing that it will begin shipping WinDVD(TM), its first in a series of hardware-replacement software products, in December.

WinDVD will include a number of advanced features that have never before been available for DVD playback in the PC environment.

WinDVD's distinct offerings include an integrated player environment for playing back DVD movies, interactive DVD titles, VCD 1.1 and 2.0 movies and interactive titles, MPEG 1 and 2 video files, AC3 files and the hot new internet audio file format, MP3 files.

Other IVI firsts include software video de-interlacing for interlaced video content, true software alpha blending for the highest quality subpictures, highlights and subtitles, a software scalar to dramatically improve the quality of downscaled video on graphics chips that do not have scalars built in, software brightness and color control for the video window, a full precision video decoder for the highest quality video available on the PC, and AQC, IVI's Advanced Quality Control algorithms to allow the end-user to tune the quality to compensate for faster or slower CPUs.

The advanced player includes built-in support for AMD's K6(R)-2 3DNow! multimedia instructions. WinDVD also includes a host of audio enhancements tailored to the new generation of sound cards and speaker sets now hitting the market, like true multi-channel 4 speaker output and S/PDIF digital audio output.

"What we've tried to do is take the lessons we have learned in the past several years about DVD and the PC environment and create a product that fills the holes left behind by the first generation software DVD players," noted V.P. of sales and marketing, Joe Monastiero.

"We've gathered together a truly remarkable team that has put together a monumental product in record time. We believe we've created a single product that serves the entire PC market, not just specific hardware platforms."

WinDVD supports all of the industry standard DVD APIs, including DirectShow(TM), DirectDraw(TM) and DirectSound(TM), and is legacy compatible with the MCI interactive title standard. In addition, InterVideo has a unique application interface layer to allow WinDVD to quickly support any graphics adapter with DVD hardware-assist features, like motion compensation and IDCT.

WinDVD's architecture is uniquely modular and tightly tailored to the DVD specification and the intricacies of the PC system environment, providing the most seamless navigation experience available. WinDVD will be available for licensing to OEMs directly and distribution for system integrators. A subset of WinDVD, IVI's NetShow(TM) MPEG2 decoder, will be available in January for applications that include distance learning, on-line training, and corporate Intranet video requirements.

"The combination of InterVideo's WinDVD player and our powerful new TNT graphics processor provides users the ultimate in video and gaming experience," commented Dan Vivoli, vice president of product marketing at nVIDIA. "IVI has eclipsed the market with its second generation feature set and superb video decode quality."

WinDVD will be displayed prominently at this fall's Comdex show at IVI's booth in the Microsoft Partner Pavilion (No. L2036-E36) and in the nVIDIA, Rockwell, Hitachi, Aztech and CNF booths (viewing in the nVIDIA booth is by appointment only). WinDVD can also be seen by appointment at InterVideo's private Riviera suite and in VLSI's and QSound's private suites.
