Assuming that there is something of substance under the covers, and that has yet to be established, I would think that these techs are not mutually exclusive. Not enough has been disclosed on what type of fiber is optimally suited for it (and there are a growing number of choices to pick from). IOW, too little has been revealed to allow such a determination to be made by outsiders at this time, imo.

If nothing else, however, it's a great wake up call for all of us to keep in mind, if we have been lulled into placing all of our faith solidly behind WDM, dense or otherwise, as the only way to skin this cat. WDM is but an evolutionary step, imo, to the all optical net. I further see it as something that may serve as an underlying foundation for transport of other techs, or something that may be complemented by other techs, or simply be substituted by other techs as the time line progresses.
