The anti-impotence drug Viagra should be made available at public hospitals as soon as possible, according to a report to be submitted to the Hospital Authority today.

The report estimates the drug will cost the authority $500,000 a year in trial packs and therapy, but the estimated 10,000 men with the disorder will have to pay for the drug themselves.

The report on prescription guidelines, drawn up by Dr Andrew Yip Wai-chun, is based on a preliminary survey at Kwong Wah Hospital.

A poll has shown that 95 per cent of 1,000 patients would be willing to pay for Viagra .

Dr Yip said clinical trials showed it was effective in more than 70 per cent of patients.

I AM a middle-aged doctor and many of my colleagues and friends have used Viagra and found it very effective.

We hope the Ministry of Health will not drag its feet and keep on saying that the "trials" are not completed but approve its use in Malaysia soon to stop the sale of the drug in the black market.

All drugs have side-effects, including the numerous vaccines used on children such as polio, measles and chicken pox. Some children will contract diseases from vaccines but they are not banned because the advantages outweigh the side-effects.

When approved, the right to prescribe Viagra must not be limited to the urologist. Any qualified registered doctor has the same right just like for any other drug.

The other arguments on the bad effects on family life, love, etc. are pure nonsense. Imagine a woman not allowing her husband's sight to be restored just because when he can see he will be attracted to other women and leave her.

Please remember that the doctors who researched and made Viagra possible to the whole world were awarded Nobel Prizes.

Last and most important is the famous quote: "If the master bedroom of the house is unhappy, all the other rooms will be unhappy."
