Borzou,I normally feel your opinions are well thought out with realistic facts behind them. I do believe though that this time you have not made much of an effort to research this subject.Enviornmentialists often talk about wind, solar and hydroelectric power [which in it self has it's share of problems] but experts in this field understand how little they can subtract from our over all energy needs. These are not practical solutions. But sadly wishful thinking.
Surely Japan has not collapsed from it's own population. We live in a big world. The Japanese are quite wealthy they simply buy the natural resources they need.Long ago their appetite for fish had cleaned out their own waters. They now fish ours. They are major contributors to deforestation in South America.
I don't know the situation that you speak of on the Rhine. But this problem I speak of is a global one.You can indeed crowd many people into a small space. And if they are better educated and more industrious than other parts of the world they can thrive as have the Japanese. Listen,we are already carrying more people on this planet that it can sustain on a permanent biases.Ever improving technology enables us to extract more and more natural resources . But the time comes when their is nothing left then everything crashes.
China<<If they opt a course that eventually rely on renewable energy resources>> Such as?? What energy resources would you be talking about here??Don't say sun, wind or hydroelectric. Doesn't have a chance. Why do you think they want to do it with coal? It's all they have. And they have lots. There is more as with all countries with growing economic status they want protein this will put new strains on agriculture or world fish stocks. They will want TV and all of the good life. All of these things pollute.Soon they will be us. Polluting like us[at very best] only with five times the people. At best they by themselves will double the worlds pollution and natural resource use.
<<colonizing our solar system and beyond>> The solar system? Do you know what it would cost to live on a planet with out oxygen per person? Interstellar travel for large numbers ? Oh Borzou my friend do you have any idea how far away ,if ever, we are from this? <<dare to dream>> I'm afraid that is just what we are doing.
