Thanks Darrin, I am not a music historian, but I love hymns. Here is a little of what I found out about Mr. Chisholm. Thomas Obediah Chisholm 1866-1960 Born: July 29, 1866, Franklin, Kentucky. Thomas Chisholm was educated in a small country school, and became its teacher at age 16. At age 21, he became associate editor of the weekly newspaper, The Franklin Favorite. In 1893, he became a Christian under the ministry of Dr. Henry Clay Morrison (future president of Asbury College, Wilmore, Kentucky). Chisholm moved to Louisville at the persuasion of Morrison and became editor of the Pentecostal Herald. He was ordained a Methodist minister in 1903 and served a brief pastorate at Scottsville, Kentucky. In poor health, he moved his family to a farm near Winona Lake, Indiana. He became an insurance salesman, moving to Vineland, New York, in 1916. He retired in 1953 to the Methodist Home for the Aged in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. Thomas Chisholm wrote over 1200 poems, of which 800 were published, and many set to music. Died: February 29, 1960, Ocean Grove, New Jersey. The Hymns (or poems set to music) by Mr. Chisholm that are in Songs of Faith and Praise by Alton Howard(published 1994 for acapella singing,4 part harmony) are following: Great is Thy Faithfulness 1923 Oh, to be Like Thee 1897 Only in Thee 1905 A New Creature 1935 Living For Jesus 1917 Be With Me Lord 1935 Bring Christ Your Broken Life 1935 It is interesting to note that in the songbook is also listed when and by whom the words were put to music. Mr. Chisholm must have been known as a good writer cause in the case of these songs the music was written in the same year as the words. As I was looking at these songs, I can see Mr. Chisholms faith was very strong, and as did David, his need for communicating with God was great. That may be more than you cared to know, but anyway there it is. God Bless dan
