Connex Rail Awards Cubic Transportation Systems $16.5 Million Contract To Provide New Gate Systems At 22 Key British Commuter Stations

biz.yahoo.com

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--OCT. 2, 1998--Connex Rail, a private company that provides rail service for the United Kingdom rail network, has awarded Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS) a $16.5 million contract to provide new gating systems at 22 of its key commuter stations.

CTS, a subsidiary of Cubic Corp. (AMEX:CUB - news), a San Diego-based company, has provided automatic fare collection services in the UK since 1978, and is currently a major partner in the London Transport PRESTIGE project, the most comprehensive upgrade of ticketing and revenue collection systems ever undertaken by London Transport.

The new gates will provide Connex Rail with detailed transaction data for every ticket processed, including the number of transactions for each gate walkway, individual ticket types and details about point of issue, as well as date and time information. This information is summarized into management reports that assist the firm with timetables and service planning.

The contract also includes maintenance and associated services. ''The installation of the gates will play an important part in protecting our revenue by reducing fare evasion and the crime and vandalism associated with ticketless travel,'' said Antoine Hurel, Connex chief executive.

Connex Rail is one of the largest of the 25 separate private Train Operating Companies (TOC) established as a result of the privatization of the UK's rail network.

Designed to meet the UK's stringent rail safety requirements, CTS's electronic gates are already familiar to users of key commuter stations on the London Underground and many TOCs across the southeastern region of the country.

Work on the project has begun and will be completed by Spring 1999. The gates will be manufactured at Cubic facilities in Tullahoma, Tenn.

Cubic Transportation Systems has installed mass transit automatic fare collection systems in the world's largest metropolitan centers, including Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago, London, Guangzhou, China, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Seoul and Sydney. In the near future, systems manufactured by CTS will also be in operation in Shanghai, Thailand and Canada.
