16 PCI-slots=1024 virtual ports> ADAX EUROPE/ Voice over IP "no mystery" claims Adax Europe November 17, 1998 M2 PRESSWIRE : Wide Area Communications specialist Adax Europe, is claiming to have overcome the main obstacles to the effective provision of voice over IP with the launch of a new protocol controller designed to provide high quality voice transmission using IP over private networks or the Internet. The usual bandwidth that is required for standard voice telephony is 64 Kbps. The Adax ACT-PCI protocol controller, when connected to an Adax ANC E1 interface is able to deliver voice over IP connectivity by providing multiple 64 Kbps ports per board and with 2 ports per ACT-PCI card, each port supporting up to 32 channels per port. This means that effectively 1024 virtual ports (separate 64Kbps connections) can be delivered through a single 16 slot PCI backplane. By combining this approach with voice encoding and decoding software, plus a connection oriented protocol such as Frame Relay or LAPD, Adax claims that large scale voice over IP connectivity is achievable today. The high throughput of the ACT-PCI is managed by the new Adax Avalanche bus engine, which together with 512KB of static RAM for high speed data buffering reduces demand for host CPU cycles resulting in less than 4% host utilisation at full T1/E1 speeds. "Voice transmission need a minimum of 64Kbps of bandwidth to be effective over traditional telephony networks. By using the Adax ACT card, the solution has the added advantage of including error correction provided by the voice Codec and the protocol which gives better all round performance than traditional networks," commented Adax Europe director of operations, Robin Kent. "This overcomes the main obstacles to voice over IP provision - delivering the necessary bandwidth while maintaining transmission quality. " The Adax ACT-PCI drivers currently support the main Unix operating systems and will also support Windows NT shortly. Prices for the ACT-PCI start at GBP 1,150. About Adax Based in Berkeley, California, Adax develops and manufactures communications solutions for Wide Area Networks offering designers a server-based communications architecture which lower both time to market and the cost of operations, while helping to increase revenue and profitability. Adax products support X.25 (including TCP/IP and OSI), Frame Relay/PPP, SS#7 and HDLC for all of the main UNIX and Windows NT operating systems. E1/T1, G.703/4 and ISDN interfaces are also supported. The Adax range of intelligent controller cards is available for all leading bus architectures and is sold world-wide to OEMs, integrators and resellers. <<M2 PRESSWIRE -- 11/16/98>>
