Voicenet Launches Breakthrough Internet Technology; First ISP to Provide True Telephone to Telephone Internet Calling For Homes and Businesses in the Region

November 18, 1998

IVYLAND, Pa., Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/Voicenet, the Mid-Atlantic region's leading Internet Service Provider (ISP), is changing the face of communications by offering a revolutionary new way to make low cost, high-quality telephone calls using the latest Internet technology. Voicenet is the first ISP in the region to offer Internet Telephone services for homes and businesses utilizing conventional telephones for local and long distance calls over the Internet.

"No longer is the Internet merely for use by people with computers," said Voicenet President Carmen A. DiCamillo. "Voicenet's Internet Calling brings the power of the Internet to everyone who uses the telephone."

"Voicenet's state-of-the-art, high-speed data network transmits digital-quality voice communications over the Internet to any phone, anywhere in the country," said DiCamillo. Calls can be made from any touch-tone phone, including cellular and pay phones. "We've strategically designed our national network to deliver clear, crisp voice communications, in addition to our fast, reliable Internet service." Voicenet's Internet Telephone Network utilizes 64K of bandwidth per call, ensuring the highest-quality connection from any telephone. This differs significantly from other offerings that compress the voice signal to as little as 8K of bandwidth.

"Voicenet has spent a vast amount of time and resources to develop our Internet Telephone Service," said DiCamillo. Internet calling was tested at the University of Delaware before made available to the public. According to DiCamillo, the technology received rave reviews from the University.

"Voicenet's Internet Telephone services can reduce phone bills 50 to 70 percent for homes and businesses," said DiCamillo. Calls to and from any number in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware are five cents a minute. Long distance calls to anywhere in the continental United States are seven cents a minute. Furthermore, there is never a connection charge and Voicenet's Internet calling rates are good any time of the day or night, seven days a week. "The savings promise to be dramatic," said DiCamillo.

Residential subscribers simply dial a local access number provided by Voicenet and then enter the number they are dialing as usual. No special phone or computer is required to place the call over the Internet. Local access numbers are currently in place throughout the Delaware Valley, with locations throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware scheduled to be installed in the next few weeks.

There is a low $4.95 monthly fee for the Internet Telephone service. The fee is waived for Voicenet Internet Service customers. Phone charges are billed monthly to a credit card. Subscribers may review their calls and charges online, in near-real time at a secure Voicenet Web site.

"For business applications, Voicenet can provide a dedicated leased line that can interface with an existing PBX or phone system and provide an Internet dial-tone for local and long distance calling, in addition to high-speed Internet connectivity," said DiCamillo. Businesses enjoy the same low rates, five cents a minute for anywhere in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and

Delaware, seven cents for anywhere in the U.S., with added features. Businesses with multiple offices, within Voicenet's footprint, can be connected to the network, proving telephone services between offices at a rate of zero cents a minute. And as with residential services, there is never a connection fee.

Voicenet's Internet Telephone services also feature 800 number access, making the network accessible from anywhere in the United States. Calls using the 800 number are a flat fee of 13 cents a minute. Unlike other 800 calling cards, there is no first minute charge or per call fee. "The Voicenet calling card is ideal for anyone that travels and means huge savings for students calling home from anywhere in the U.S.," said DiCamillo.

"We rely on the Internet for so much vital information these days," said DiCamillo. "The same Internet that provides our e-mail, research and recreation is now an even more powerful communications tool. Voicenet is dedicated to constantly developing this tool to its fullest potential."
