Trader - I recently moved about 3 blocks from my previous house. (closer to the ocean). In doing so my line quality went to he_l. After being very nice to two different installers and a friend that works for the phone co., I was told to see if the installer could switch my lines to "non loaded lines". As I understand it, a loaded line is coiled every so many thousand feet. The voice traveling thru the coil is magnified by the coil. This same coil is bad for our internet connection. Anyway I ended up with all 3 of my computer lines on non-loaded lines and now connect at 44 to 52K. Prior to that the connect speed would vary from 14K to 44K and I was always getting disconnected. The other thing I picked up is you want to try to avoid a "multiplex" hook up with the phone co.
Just my 2 cents
