If you understand the KdV equation, how non-linear amplitude evolution compensates for dispersion, then you'll see how you can have an interpretation that uses two dimensions of time, two degrees of freedom parameterized by time, to explain pulse state and evolution. I can't explain the EM field easily unless you're adept at tensor analysis and no one has ever been able to picture it. The best description is both fields are rolling expanding tubes with a sense of circulation, the two fields intersecting at right angles.

The data feed is input into the pre-pumped photodiode. You have electrons exciting diode atoms into states which harmonically add with the input beat frequency. Not much gobble-de-gook there, easy to implement, and fairly well-known, but hard to comprehend.
