Off Topic -- ok, my view of the world (a la Quicken) has changed for the worse.

Just had a most unpleasant discussion with Quicken customer service. The long and short of it is -- if you use Intuit Online Service (arguably the BEST online option, as it frees you from locking in with a particular bank, and gives you the flexibility to hook up to 10 financial institutions for bill pay), you then CAN'T use "Online Banking" with those same institutions. This means, to paraphrase Quicken customer support, you have to choose between being able to download your bank statement data from your bank (even if you have no desire to use, say, Citi's billpay service), vs. using Intuit's superior billpay service (which, by the way, is NOT free).

Totally ludicrous, IMHO. A big scam to force consumers to succumb to their Bank's billpay policies (for example, banks playing the float against you, retaining your payee list to make it difficult to switch banks, etc.). Goes totally against the overall goal of simplifying the consumer's financial experience.

Look at E-Trade's philosophy -- "all information, all the time, for FREE, and, by the way, you'll like us so much you'll want to sign up as a customer..." Can't wait for smaller, more aggressive FI's, Portals, etc. to tap into the growing number of disgruntled early adopters that have to put up with crap like this...

Just my usual humble opinion...

RK

P.S. -- please bear in mind that the critique above relates primarily to Intuit and various banks. CF makes bucks regardless of which method I choose (unless I go with Citi, which will never happen). Hmmm, maybe I'll check out the new Electronic Banking Association web page to find a new bank that will actually WANT to make my life easier).
