Preparing for War More than 23,000 U.S. military personnel, 170 warplanes, and 20 Navy ships — eight of them capable of firing long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles—are poised in the Gulf region near Iraq. Pentagon planners are readying orders to send about 2,000 more U.S. ground troops, 60 to 70 more warplanes — including F-117A stealth fighters — and additional ships to the Persian Gulf.
