According to Mr. Roberts, the user has opened four separate accounts in recent weeks, using different names but usually identifying himself as being with a New York investment house. Each time, the person sent out bursts of e-mail messages before the company realized he had registered with a fake credit card number, Mr. Roberts says. In the most recent incident, the user opened an account at 11 a.m., began sending out the Y2K spams at 4 p.m., and his account was closed at 6 p.m.

"We've warned our people to be careful of someone opening an account from a New York investment house," he says. "This has been a particular headache for us, just because of the sheer volume of it." Mr. Roberts says it is impossible to tell how many copies of the spam were sent.
