Unfortunately though if you have an old 286, 386 or 486 with DOS or Win 3.1 that you use for word processing or other uses say in an office or school (believe it or not there are a lot of these systems out there), McAfee's system will be of little use too you.

Yes, and also of little use will be knowing your software is not Y2K compliant as software for those platforms ceased development years ago. Either the software is compliant or you just have to work around whatever inconveniences you find until you fork over the bucks for a new PC.

As for older word processing software possibly being non Y2K compliant, that's a new one on me. Don't know about you, but I've never used a word processor to do date calculations.

The biggest "problem" with older PCs is going to be the RTCs (real-time clocks). If they keep resetting to a date in the 1900s each time you turn the machine off that would certainly be a hassle, but not the end of the world. Nevertheless, I agree that people who insist on using their older PCs until they flat out burst into flames definitely should check out one to the numerous RTC/BIOS checking programs that are out there. Fortunately, many of these programs are free.

Hope this helps.
