Since I'm in the telecom industry, let me explain some of these new taxes showing up on the bill. They've always been there before, you just didn't realize it. They were in the fees that long distance companies paid to the Baby Bells for "access." Access charges have now been made transparent, i.e. the FCC lowered the rates that are paid in access charges but then they added a fee for universal service. Long distance companies are still unhappy about the high access charges so they have made the decision to print them on your bill so that you will get pissed off about them. The hope is that eventually everyone calls their congressmen and the FCC caves in to pressure to eliminate the fees entirely. You're not actually paying more for telephone service today; it just seems you are paying more taxes.
