I'm in the same boat you're in as far as "serious trading" goes. I use ETrade -- they told me they have level 2 coming in about a month. You might consider something like the All Tech Trading group. They bypass retail trading desks like ETrade (and Schwab, Datek, and all the others) through direct access trading. You can "SOES" (Small Order Execution System) orders of 1,000 shares, or post your orders on instinent (INCA), essentially giving you the same powers to buy and sell that any MM has. Their proprietary software is called the Attain System, and I think it's a very powerful package. If you are going to work out of your home, you should have a cable modem, though.
