$4.95 Per Month Unlimited Internet Telephone Service Call Anywhere, Anytime or Leave Voice Mail LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 12, 1998--Unlimited long-distance conversations for $4.95 per month are attracting thousands of people with PCs and Internet connections to try MediaRing's call-anywhere, call-anytime, talk-as-long-as-you-want service. A new version of the company's Internet telephony software, MediaRing Talk99, includes voice mail. A beta release of the new software is available free at the company's Web site, www.mediaring.com. The final release version of the software is due early in 1999. During Comdex/Fall '98, MediaRing will show MediaRing Talk99 at Sands Convention Center meeting room S-6068R and during the Lunch@Piero's media-only event, Monday through Thursday, at 355 Center Drive. ''Response to our service proves that people want to call anywhere in the world for a reasonable price,'' says Ede-Phang Ng, CEO of MediaRing. ''Our $4.95 per month price is an outstanding value, especially for calling friends and family during the holidays.'' The $4.95 monthly subscription fee is separate from what the callers normally pay their Internet service providers. The first 30 days of service are free. Ng says MediaRing Talk surpasses competitive products because it connects regardless of whether the person called is logged on the Internet. The only requirements are that the computers must be on and the modems must be plugged into phone lines. ''Everyone knows how to make phone calls,'' Ng says. ''Our goal was to make using MediaRing Talk identical to placing a regular call.'' After the caller enters a phone number to dial, the connection process is automatic and takes place in the background. Callers and call recipients can work on other programs while they are waiting for calls or talking. With MediaRing Talk99, if the person called does not answer, the caller can leave a voice message. Other features include caller ID, an integrated telephone book, a ''Chat Box'' for exchanging text messages during a conversation and a call log that remembers calls, even ones that the recipient was not available to accept. MediaRing Talk99 requires at least a 133MHz Pentium with 16MB RAM, 7MB free disk space, a 14.4 Kbps modem, Windows-compatible sound card, a microphone and speakers or an earphone. MediaRing Talk99 will work with Windows 95 or Windows 98. The sound and voice quality is generally good, Ng says, but slightly lower than that of a normal phone. It is clear and audible. Dependent on Internet traffic load, there can be some latency or delay in the transmission of the signal, usually no more than one or two seconds. A gauge on the MediaRing Talk display shows actual Internet traffic levels. Ng says that calls placed during daytime business hours, when Internet traffic is lightest, are at their peak quality.
