Re: MSFT everywhere

I find your apparent knee-jerk reaction to the thought of Windows in the microwave oven quite interesting.

Personally I -like- the thought of a more flexible, programmable microwave oven. But I think you needn't worry; price is the chief competitive factor and nobody will buy $300 microwaves.

The most interesting aspect of smarter appliances is the creation of standard programming interface (API) Once the hardware becomes abstracted away via a standard API, the door to competition is opened, and some really NICE interfaces with compelling value propositions could materialize. How about controlling that VCR by speech?

YOU: "VCR, record the next episode of Star Trek."
VCR: "Yessss, massster."

YOU: "Microwave, make me some popcorn."
OVEN: "Can DO!"

YOU: "Mr. Coffee, the coffee was too strong yesterday."
CM: ...
YOU: "Mr. Coffee. Mr. Coffee!?"
CM: ...
YOU: "Microwave, take over coffee duties today."
OVEN: "Can DO!"

All the vendors that supported the standard API would be able to use any speech recognition and operating system technology written to that API.

The power of object abstraction is tremendous. It's the kind of power that builds multi-billion dollar companies.
