DELL COMMENTARY ZDNET TODAY:• Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq: DELL)

PC giant Dell Computer will announce its third-quarter results Thursday with First Call consensus expecting a profit of 27 cents a share. If history is any indicator, it will surely top that estimate by a penny or two this time around.

Also boding well for Dell is the strong PC demand enjoyed in the past couple of quarters by chipmakers such as Intel as well as competitors Gateway Inc. and Apple Computer Inc.

In the year-ago quarter, it pocketed $248 million, or 17 cents a share, on sales of $3.19 billion.

Twenty-one of the 30 analysts covering the stock rate it a "buy" or "strong buy."

Last quarter, Dell earned $346 million, or 25 cents a share, on sales of $4.33 billion.

On Wednesday, Dell shares closed up 1 5/8 to 71 15/16, just a whisker off its 52-week high of 72 ½.
