See Nas is down. I suppose that explains why SUNW is down!

Still, I think SUNW is awesome--great potential!!!

Linux May Keep Comdex In The Spotlight
(11/13/98 1:52 p.m. ET)
(http://www.techweb.com/wire/story/comdex98/TWB19981113S0005)
From the article:
"...One of the busiest sections at Comdex may be the new Linux pavilion, where hardware and software developers will try to persuade attendees of the viability of their upstart open source platform. More than a dozen companies will promote the operating system as an alternative to Microsoft Windows 98 and Win NT..."

"...Neither Apple, IBM, Sun Microsystems, nor the U.S. Department of Justice will have booths at the event..."

======================================================================
This would be a good show for SUNW and all those JINI vendors to cross promote their new "jini enabled hardware". I doubt if anything is ready yet. It will probably be next year that we see these new devices.

This year will be "The Year of LINUX" and next year will be "The Year of JINI"....MSFT will have their time in 2000 with Windows 2000...hopefully by that time there will be several other choices available that provide the end-user a seamless network connection utilizing the open standard IP protocol. I believe there will be a much larger demand for thin-client servers that will require a stable OS like Linux or Solaris. Who knows, these servers may even run using some type of optimized JVM.

If the box makers begin to provide Linux (or Solaris) as the OS of choice for their new servers, then MSFT will have a hard time servicing this growth market.

EKS

Yes, I did (attend the shareholder meeting). In fact, I just got back this p.m., and have been working my way through the 100 or so new postings here that appeared since I left. This was the first Sun shareholder meeting I've attended, and I was surprised to find that we were asked to sign an NDA before being taken in by security! Given that, and the fact that I didn't really pay much attention to the terms of the NDA (and didn't take away a copy) I'm not sure just what I can say about the demos we were shown of upcoming products. I will say that I was very impressed, across the board; slick stuff is being prepared for announcement in just about every area of the company. I spent most of my time learning about Jini (_very cool_) and talking to the Enterprise CPU and storage guys (big bucks!). I also now have a personalized Java ring of my own (also _very cool_).

The meeting itself was about as you might expect. McNealy did most of the talking, and I had heard before much of what he said (e.g. Java + two drops of poison = Windows). They showed a Pixar video rendered on Sun machines that was a big hit with the attendees -- it's supposed to be on the Web at a URL that's written down on a piece of paper somewhere in my luggage -- as I recall, it's entitled Geri's Game if you want to search for it.

I would categorize the meeting as generally upbeat and professional. It was standing room only, which seemed to surprise the Sun folks a little.

I imagine someone else who attended has already made comments which I'll encounter if I read through another 20 or 30 postings, so I think I'll let it go at that for now.

JMHO, as always.
