EMC Fortifies Industry's Premier Portfolio Of Business Continuity Solutions
Delivers Added Assurance Of Uninterrupted Business Operations
HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov 16, 1998--EMC Corporation today announced significant enhancements to its landmark portfolio of business continuity solutions. With the new offerings, EMC brings customers added confidence that they can avoid disastrous business losses and eliminate costly, disruptive data backup windows. The new products also firmly place EMC on the road to increasing software revenue this year by some 125 percent, to $400 million, and sustaining its position as one of the world's largest and fastest growing software providers.

''Today's announcement is further evidence of EMC's lead in assisting customers with a fundamental business process enterprise information management, protection and sharing,'' said Michael C. Ruettgers, EMC President and CEO. ''EMC's core competency is keeping business information accessible so businesses can concentrate on their own core competency - serving customers, making decisions, and generating revenue. Information - in file systems, databases, and data centers - makes up the competitive advantage of every business. Ensuring ongoing and secure access to that information is EMC's business.''

EMC delivers these advantages through enhancements to the following Symmetrix Enterprise Storage-based software solutions:(See Fact Sheets for product details(a))

Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF): With more than 3,500 licenses shipped, the world's leading data replication solution now offers customers:

Higher performance, as a result of Symmetrix microcode enhancements.
Multi-hop mirroring, which uses EMC TimeFinder software to mirror to a third Symmetrix site only data that has changed, thus reducing both telecommunications line costs and resynchronization time.
The ability to define logical volume groups, which can be associated with a given workload or application across multiple Symmetrix systems or within the same Symmetrix, and appear as one to the user, bringing a new level of granularity and manageability to discrete workloads.
Remote management of mirrored data without the need for a host at the mirror site.
The ability to swap the source/target roles of replicated Symmetrix-based volumes, for added flexibility and enhanced resource allocation.
EMC TimeFinder: The leading data mirroring solution of its kind, with 2,500 licenses shipped, now offers customers the following significant enhancements:

Dataset-level management, which delivers finer data granularity and support for standard information management tools.
The ability to refresh only the data that has changed since the last update, which reduces the disk space required while improving Symmetrix and wide-area network (WAN) performance.
More powerful, flexible management capabilities through remote control of mirrored data, for more cost-effective use of enterprise information and Symmetrix resources.
EMC Data Manager (EDM): The industry's fastest disk-to-tape enterprise storage backup solution now delivers even broader application, database and tape silo support, including:

SAP and UNIX filesystem backup support for EDM Symmetrix Connect; Oracle, Informix,Sybase and UNIX filesystem support for EDM Symmetrix Path; as well as support for customers' investments in tape silos from Sony and StorageTek.
Enhanced flexibility in selecting the information protection procedure that is right for the enterprise - EDM Symmetrix Connect, EDM Symmetrix Path, or EDM Enterprise Network.
SRDF: Breakthrough Business Continuity Solution

Larry Henderson, senior vice president of operations, SunGard Recovery Services, said, ''As strategic business partners, SunGard and EMC have worked closely together to deliver revolutionary business continuity solutions, including the world's first installation of remote data mirroring to a commercial recovery facility in 1997 and the largest number of SRDF users. EMC's SRDF and TimeFinder products continue to provide SunGard with the enabling technology to deliver our SunVault electronic vaulting and mirroring solutions to our subscribers.''

SRDF is the industry's most widely deployed business continuity and disaster recovery solution. In addition to disaster recovery, SRDF is ideally suited for applications such as data center migration, workload management, Year 2000 and Euro testing, and data warehouse loading. In each case, SRDF makes critical information available without disrupting normal revenue-generating business operations.

According to Dave Hill, Senior Analyst, Storage & Storage Management, at Aberdeen Group, Inc., of Boston, ''EMC Enterprise Storage has changed traditional lines of thinking. The functionality of such EMC software products as SRDF, TimeFinder and EDM, working synergistically with Symmetrix, deliver innovative, high-value solutions to customers. EMC enables IT managers to handle workload volume, continue efficient operations, and remain productive, while optimizing investments in systems, networks and applications.''

TimeFinder: Breaking the Mold of Conventional Data Mirroring

Traditional data mirroring involves an original disk and its reflected image on a second disk. EMC TimeFinder, on the other hand, non-disruptively creates multiple, independently addressable copies for such activities as backups, data warehouse loading, application development, and Y2K testing. By issuing commands from the host system, these Business Continuity Volumes (BCVs) can be managed separately and used to run simultaneous tasks in parallel.

''In an increasingly competitive global economy, corporations' bottom-line success demands highly available business information,'' said Mike Kahn, Chairman, The Clipper Group, of Wellesley, Mass. ''Fast, reliable, scalable, and flexible business continuity solutions under a common infrastructure are essential elements of a comprehensive storage architecture. EMC's TimeFinder, SRDF and EDM products, together with Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems, figure prominently in enterprise strategies for ensuring continuous, secure availability of critical business information.''

''These new product capabilities will enable Comdisco to offer data protection and advanced recovery capabilities to a much broader market,'' said Vic Fricas, senior vice president, Comdisco Continuity Services. ''What was once a high-end service, is now a cost-effective solution for customers, regardless of their geographic location. We will continue to work together with EMC to design and test continuity solutions that address the issues of high availability and data protection on a global basis.''

EDM: Scalable, High-Performance Backup/Restore

From nondisruptive backup of high-end open systems applications, while offloading the application server and network workloads, to high-speed ''lights out'' centralized backup of distributed server environments, EDM ensures that enterprise information is properly, securely and cost-effectively protected. EDM's innovative approach eliminates the impact of conventional backup solutions on normal business operations.

''EDM provides us with backup performance and capacity not generally available elsewhere,'' said Scott Chasin, Chief Technical Officer at USA.NET, Inc., of Colorado Springs, Col., a leading provider of Web-based email. ''In our drive to create the Post Office of the Future, scalable backup solutions are an essential component of an open systems environment, especially in light of the increasing amounts of data being generated by the Internet. The EDM solution ensures that we have a reliable, cost-effective back up solution in place - one that allows us to conduct business as usual no matter what the circumstances - and without any impact on our bottom line.''

Pricing and Availability

All products are available now. Pricing for the enhanced version of SRDF remains unchanged, starting at $60,000. The new version of TimeFinder is priced starting at $72,000. EDM 4.3 is priced starting at $150,000, including software, a CPU platform, tape library and devices, as well as service.
