It's definitely not a software thing. I think it's the former, that Intel doesn't want people to put off Christmas purchases and wait for Katmai. This will allow the ramp to Katmai to go more smoothly than the ramp from Pentium to Pentium MMX. If you recall, Intel is keeping its rather huge Katmai software development efforts under tight wraps.

That statement is contrary to what I have heard.

Intel will have its own demonstration area and I suspect that key customers will see Katmai processors with Camino chip sets and RAMBUS memory "blazing" away at Comdex.
