AvTel Shares Rise on Plans to Offer High-Speed Internet Access

Santa Barbara, California, Nov. 12 (Bloomberg) -- AvTel Communications Inc. shares more than quintupled after the company said it plans to roll out high-speed Internet access nationally on existing phone lines at speeds up to 50 times faster than conventional modems.

Shares of the Santa Barbara, California-based provider of data networking, voice and high-speed Internet access to business and residences rose 10 to 12 1/4 in late trading of 1.0 million, compared with its 3,400 three-month daily average. Earlier, shares touched 13.

AvTel Communications plans to offer the high-speed Internet access, known as DSLink Service, to customers nationwide via AvTel modems. The service is available now in Santa Barbara and will be made available in California cities Goleta and Carpinteria by the end of November.

''We will roll it out nationally,'' said Anthony Papa, AvTel Communications chairman and chief executive. He said the company will consider opportunities in other markets throughout the country as they arise.

AvTel's product is an alternative to cable modems, he said.

The company offers the service through its Silicon Beach Communications unit.
