To anyone on this thread,
I wonder if someone has insight into this monitor problem?

About two years ago I got a P166 system with a 15 inch monitor made by a company called Proton. Recently I upgraded to Win 98, installed two ATI Expert 98 PCI cards and added a 19 Viewsonic monitor. Everything went fine for about a week, then the Proton went black, dead tube, nothing. It was under warranty and they sent me another one(this was taken care of by the little neighborhood computer shop where I got the system. Nice people). The new monitor worked fine for several hours one night and for about an hour the next morning. Then it to went black. Now they are going to send me another monitor.

The question is, is it possible that the monitor is not at fault but maybe there is a bad video card that is trashing the monitor or something of that nature. I don't want to lose another monitor. I am sure they would balk at sending me a third replacement.

Any ideas?

Thanks Bob

Anythings possible. I somehow doubt it though. more likely power surge, lightning, or ESD. Its certainly could happen. Why not bring the whole box to the local dealer and have them check it out first. Will save you time and potentially money...

good luck, let us know how it works out...

Sean

Check the monitor's manual, and make sure you are not setting the ATI card to a resolution or refresh rate that the monitor does not support (can't handle). If you are, and ATI doesn't allow you to choose different settings for each card, you will either have to scale down the settings for the Viewsonic to something the Proton can handle, or replace the Proton.

That's the only thing I can think of that would make this happen. Proton has always made some of the finer TV monitors, and I have recently been seeing their computer monitors in action, and they look very good, with no problems that I've heard of.

Good luck.
