I agree, but brother we will have the vehicle. Michael had to hide his excitement about the $10 mil per day when he gave his talk in Chicago. I thought to myself, what is Michael Dell doing giving a lecture on the internet, why did he pick that topic. Now I know and we have just scratched the surface. DOWN LOADABLE SOFTWARE for every conceiveable application CPQ had this idea in 1996, it was a program called 'integration server' or something like that. It allowed the corporate customers to order up or build images of their various systems, they could even specify the rev since some SAP apps need back-rev'd components. It operated over internet, extranet, or via private line for the most security-conscious. It supported both push and pull models. You could also order automatic updates from various vendors, and get automatic billing passed through to corporate licensing or other existing agreements. It was (is I guess) quite complete. Some big companies picked it up and are still using it, and it forms some of the current 'active answers' backbone. But it didn't exactly burn up the track. Maybe Dell could do more with this idea, they are certainly a better marketing company than CPQ. But I think it is an idea that didn't really pan out.
