If it is so profitable, why did Merril Lynch just sell their whole Specialist Unit at what I hear was a low price?

<<I would agree they do not control a days flow, but can scare you of your position
to their benefit>>

That is part and parcel of this no limit game.. I am quite sure that big behind the scenes operators (eg, the guys behind AMZN) scare the specialists out of their positions as well, to their benefit. <g>

To some degree this specialist behaviour is what causes the fluctuations. For example, someone is offering stock and there are few bids.. The specialist offers the stock lower , this causes one of two things--- The lower price attracts a buyer , or scares the seller down.. If the seller goes low enough, the specialist will grab the stock, the print on the tape will wake up the potential buyers and voila in come the buy orders.. I don't see anything particularly evil in that,, .. Specialists and everyone like to see stocks trading, not dormant..

PS; I'm quite sure that a lot of orders that the specialist sees are lies,, eg: much more to sell than has been shown to him, etc.
