Third Quarter Profits Worst Since 1995

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 12, 1998--Asia's woes -- and resulting cheap
imports and lost sales -- dragged U.S. profits down further in the Third Quarter.

Profits for the 900 companies on Business Week's Corporate Scoreboard dropped 4% in the
third quarter from a year earlier, on a 7% sales rise. It marks the worst performance since the
final three months of 1995. The big winners: retailing and computer software and services. The big losers: Cars and
trucks, and goal, oil, and gas.
