Carl,

<<She wants to use it for genealogy, and wants to scan in loads of old pictures. >>

My wife has this set up plus digital camera, color printer etc. Not only does she archive pictures, but she then uses software to create posters, cards, etc. creating richer files yet. I do not know how long this interest will last but after a year there is no sign of attenuation.

Best,
Stitch

Carl;

Although, I am no tech. expert on HDs I am a pro. graphic designer/ photographer with 30 yrs. in the printing bus. May I suggest that you buy a Seagate Barracuda, external 4 gig. for your wife. Cost about $300 or if you have room, an internal for about $250.00. That keeps her stuff separate and gives her the storage. It is an excellent drive for scanning because it has a fast seek rate. When used as a scratch disk with Photoshop and the scanner software plug -in it performs beautifully. Also, you can easily transfer it to another box.
