If it is a cyclical business you do, but only if they have the strength to survive to the next up cycle. MU has more than enough money to survive another year or two, and now demand is stronger than expected moving forward the expected shortage.

For what it is worth, I also bought WFR at 3 for the same reason - it just couldn't get any worse. Once it became clear that WFR would survive to the next period of wafer shortages the price shot up to 8 even though business is still terrible. MU will recover long before WFR, though, because it is much better run. You do point out the difference between MU and WFR, though, and why one is at 8 and the other is at 47: For WFR business really is terrible, while for MU it only looks terrible.

Amateurs do it the other way. There was a chucklehead on the Yahoo threads that read about all the plant closings and layoffs in the semi industry and started shorting the semi-cap companies. Right idea, but two years too late. He's broke now, of course.

>>>> btw, mu made more money last year at this time than they will this year at this time. since last year was better than this year, does that mean 1998 will be better than 1999? hmmmmmmmm...

And last year at this time they had not diluted the stock by 23%, added over 1 billion to the debt, etc. I DO NOT see why, even if all good things were true, this stock is over $20 - 25. They are still not making money and the competition is -- go figure.
