This is not the way science is supposed to be done. Too much lay and Wall Street interest to do it right. There should (may) have been close cooperation between groups trying to reproduce the results and they should not have gone public until there had been an opportunity to try it several times. Many times scientists can simply change labs and things that used to work don't. It is usually something very trivial.

There are a vast number of reasons this could be happening and at this point to assume the worst would be very risky, as well as insulting to a great scientist. Time will tell and in the end books will be written about this very interesting story.
